The History of the Polo Shirt
Spring is around the corner which means it's time for everyone to bring out their polo shirts. Polo shirts are a staple for spring and summer for all ages. Whether it's a tiny polo shirt romper for baby, something for your little lady to wear to tennis lessons or a pile of polos in your son's suitcase, polo shirts will be on everyone in the family next month. Year after year polo shirts are sold and worn all over the world. Where did the polo shirt come from?
Here's a brief history of the polo shirt:
Way back in the late 1800's, John Brooks of Brooks Brothers was visiting England and noticed the polo players buttoned down their collars so they wouldn't get in the way. He brought the idea back to the US and sold the first ever mass-marketed ‘polo shirt’. It was ‘The Original Button-Down Polo Shirt’ and started selling 1896.
But the shirt we all know as the polo shirt came years later and wasn't even associated with polo. It was created by tennis pro Jean Rene Lacoste. At that time, tennis players would wear a button down shirt and tie. Lacoste decided to come up with a more breathable lightweight shirt with just 3 buttons. Lacoste’s new tennis shirt became our modern day polo shirt.
Years later, Ralph Lauren decided to make some edits to the tennis shirt and change up the fabric. He added a polo player on a horse to his shirts and from then on they were known as "polo shirts".
Today many brands around the world make polo shirts. You can find them in every color, different fabrics, with stripes, etc. They're worn by men, women, children and even babies.
